This has been quite a sick season for us as a family. We are continually battling germs and trying to stay healthy. We are no strangers to home remedies and in fact try new remedies with regularity when we become aware of them, either through research or word of mouth. However, there are some home remedies that just work and others that may work but are just not right for us. Finding out which home remedies work (or do not work) is sometimes an adventure, as we found out this past week. I think for now we stick to the tried and the true home remedies that we know works for our family.
This past week, my husband and I were feeling particularly desperate to give our immune systems some reinforcement. After having pink eye and contracting another respiratory bug shortly after that, we needed something. We loaded the kids in the car and headed to Sprouts to try out some homeopathic remedies, since the traditional ones were only managing the symptoms. After spending a good deal of time trying to find the ones recommended to us by friends and failing. -What the heck is Kava and why would this new remedy be next to it?- We settled on a few that we thought were close (or even might be the one we were looking for) and called it a night.
That night as I lay the kids down, I gave them a dose of this magical liquid. They did not have the reaction I was anticipating. There were a few shudders, coughing fits, and looks of disgust. Kids are so dramatic, aren’t they?
When I woke the next morning, I was excited to try the ultimate immunity boosting homeopathic remedy myself. Despite my kids less than stellar reaction, I was going to be cured, people! I did as instructed by placing the liquid under the tongue. Immediately my eyes started to water. I found it hard not to gag as the liquid pooled under my tongue started to seep into the cavity of my mouth. In my panic, I swallowed it all in one gulp. I tried it again at lunch with the same results. I then made my husband try it as well. His reaction was identical to the kids’ and mine. After that, I quietly slipped the homeopathic remedies in the cupboard with the thought that they it might never again be seen in the light of day.
I think we will stick with managing the symptoms for now!
4 of my Favorite Ways to Find Relief
The kids take a nightly bath that helps clear them out before bed. I also like to keep the humidifier going to keep moisture in the air as they sleep . Shower tablets are also great for relieving congestion.
Sleeping With Head Elevated
Prop pillows under your head so that the pillows are slightly elevated. Especially for my son, this seems to reduce coughing dramatically.
Plenty of Fruits and Veggies
We make juices and smoothies to make sure everyone is getting plenty of nutrients, even when none of us feel like eating. Check out one of our favorite smoothie recipes here or here. Naked Juices are a great option too (especially when turning on the blender with already hurting head is a no-go)!
None of these are revolutionary, but they all go a long way in helping us keep on track and feeling better (even if we are not feeling the best). Most of these are also centered on sleep because rest is definitely the best remedy.
